A hybrid solar system combines the best of both worlds, the convenience and cost savings of a grid tied system with the ability to operate independently without the grid. This means that even during a power outage or load shedding, you can continue to operate and utilize your solar and battery power. Or if you choose to when you are not generating Solar energy you can use the energy stored in your batteries.

Hybrid solar systems are more expensive than a grid tied system, as you require batteries and a charge controller but less expensive than an off-grid solar system. This is due to the fact that the capacity of your battery bank can be downsized and you don`t really need a backup generator, because you are still connected to the Grid. Using off-peak electricity from the grid (Eskom) is significantly cheaper than diesel.

The introduction of hybrid solar systems has enabled many interesting smart solar innovations, allowing users to take advantage of changes in the utility’s electricity and peak demand rates throughout the day.

Solar panels happen to output the most electrical power between 10:00 and 14:00 thereby enabling you to charge the batteries with the excess power your solar panels produce during this peak period. This power can then be used later during peak demand periods, in the early evening and early mornings.
